GILBERT, Ariz. - For the 15th consecutive year, Appalachian State University field hockey was honored as a Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team recipient. Additionally, 16 student-athletes were named to the 2017 National Academic Squad and four student-athletes were awarded the prestigious Scholar of Distinction award.
Appalachian State was one of 74 Division I programs to earn the 2017 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award by posting a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2017-18 academic year. The Mountaineers made the cut with a fall GPA of 3.37.
Appalachian State is one of 18 Division I schools to be named a National Academic Team recipient each year since the award first began in 2003, joining schools such as Harvard University, Columbia University, Yale University, Duke University, Penn State University and Georgetown University.
Student-athletes who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher during the fall semester of the 2017-18 academic year are named to the NFHCA Academic Squad. Appalachian State's total of 16 is the most in program history, surpassing a previous high of 15 from 2004, 2008 and 2011.

Rebecca McLean and
Savanna Sheridan were also honored for being named to the list for all four years of their college careers.
Sophomore
Rachel Gaines and three first-year student-athletes -

Abby Merrill - achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher and were named Scholars of Distinction.
