CONWAY, S.C. - In the first of two Sun Belt matches this weekend, Appalachian State University women's tennis (10-6, 0-1 SBC) fell to Georgia State (9-11, 3-1 SBC) in a narrow 4-3 setback on Saturday afternoon at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
The Panthers captured both doubles matches and the three singles contests they needed for the win.
Highlighting the Mountaineers' day was
Teodora Sevo and
Rebecca Morse. Sevo downed Elizabet Danailova in a three-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) for her team-leading 10th win of the season in singles action.
Morse earned a hard-fought win over Lara Vovk in straight sets but needed a tiebreaking victory in the second frame to pick up the win, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), and improve to 9-3 on the season.
With GSU having just five players, the Apps started doubles action already needing one match to clinch.
However,
María José Zacarias and
Heidi Swope fell in a tight 7-5 defeat to Daniela Ramirez/Danailova in a matchup of No. 1s. GSU took the 1-0 edge when
Teodora Sevo/
Melissa Machado suffered a 6-2 loss to Kristin Rehse and Damira Muminovic.
App would already tie up the match at 1-1 after with GSU not having a sixth player for court six. But the Panthers regained the lead with Swope falling to Muminovic, 6-1, 6-2.
Zacarias was topped by Rehse as the No. 1 in the lineup, 6-2, 6-3, while Bygrave fell to Ramirez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
App State will look to bounce back tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the hosts, Coastal Carolina, to even the weekend.
