Women's Tennis Blanks NC Central in 7-0 Win

DURHAM, N.C. - Appalachian State University (9-5) rolled past North Carolina Central in a 7-0 win on Sunday afternoon in Durham.

The Mountaineers bounced back in a big way after the setback to UAB, giving the Black and Gold six wins in seven matches. App's nine wins are the most since the 2013 season.

Appalachian all three doubles and all six singles contests. Two of the three doubles wins were shutouts, as Taylor Bygrave and Rebecca got App off to a strong start with a dominating 6-0 win over Emily Pena and Lauren Millis for their second win as a pairing.  Melissa Machado and Teodora Sevo moved to 11-2 and won their seventh match in a row against Maru Berghaus/Sofia Miller, 6-0, to clinch the doubles point. Sandra Anglesjö and Emily Gaskins played at the No. 1 spot and didn't disappoint, where they topped Jamie Rogers and Polina Sakharova in a 6-1 defeat. Anglesjö/Gaskins have won five matches as a tandem.

In singles play, the Apps didn't skip a beat with five of six matches going to straight sets. Heidi Swope gave App a 2-0 lead when she defeated Sakhorava in consecutive frames, 6-0, 6-0 before Rebecca Morse set a new career high with her seventh win of the season against Miller, 6-0, 6-2. Clinching the match was Sevo, who toppled Rogers, 6-2, 6-1 as the No.1 in the lineup. 

Bygrave continued her solid day when she won her third contest in a row. It went to three sets against Burghaus, where the junior won the first set, 6-1, but fell in the next stanza, 6-1 and then pulled away for the victory. The nine wins ties last season's high. Anglesjö was the next to finish with her first singles win of the season against Mullis, 6-0, 6-0, while Machado improved to 8-4 after her convincing 6-0, 6-1 tally over Pena. 

Appalachian returns to action against UNC Greensboro on Tuesday at 2 p.m. for a home match.
