HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Appalachian State sophomore golfer
Melany Chong won individual medalist honors to lead the Mountaineers to a tie for third place in the final team standings Sunday at the two-round Low Country Intercollegiate.
Chong carded a 3-over-par 147 (73-74) to win the first individual tournament title of the Canadian's collegiate career. Her back-to-back birdies down the stretch at the Moss Creek Golf Club North course clinched the victory.
"All in all, it was a nice tournament for us," head coach
Heather Brown said. "It was great to be in the hunt and make a move today. Melany played very well on a course that was playing tough."
Freshman
Abby Bolt was the next-best finisher for the Mountaineers in a tie for 19th place at 12-over 156 (77-79). Junior
Joliana Elias was next at 158 (79-79), followed by junior
Patricia Thompson at 161 (81-80).
App State will look to build on the momentum from this weekend in its next tournament, the March 25-27 John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate in Atlanta, Ga.
