BOONE, N.C. — Five consecutive dual meet victories and an unbeaten conference record have helped Appalachian State's wrestling team climb to No. 28 in the latest
USA Today/NWCA Coaches poll.
At 8-3 overall and 6-0 in the Southern Conference, App State had six voting points to rank third in the others receiving votes category. The Mountaineers are 11th nationally among schools that aren't members of a Power Five conference.
App State has won five straight dual meets since losing 19-13 at Oklahoma, which was ranked 20th at the time. The other losses have come against No. 6 NC State and No. 24 North Carolina.
The Mountaineers improved to 6-0 in the Southern Conference with an 18-16 win at Chattanooga, which led 16-12 before
Randall Diabe and
Cary Miller pulled out victories in the last two matches.
Appalachian plays host to Duke in a nonconference dual Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Varsity Gym and concludes its SoCon schedule with a dual at The Citadel on Feb. 18. The Mountaineers already have clinched at least a share of their third straight conference championship.
