GREENSBORO, N.C. — Two strong starts weren't enough as Appalachian State's baseball team lost 11-6 at UNCG on Sunday afternoon in the second game of their three-game series. The series finale was scheduled to begin at 2:40 p.m.
Suspended after four innings Saturday with the score tied 3-3, Game 2 resumed at noon Sunday with App State (0-2) taking a 6-3 lead thanks to a three-run top of the fifth. Just like he had in the top of the first inning Saturday, designated hitter
Jason Avers produced a two-run single in the first inning of completed play Sunday.
After
Drew Beck was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Mountaineers a 4-3 edge, Avers' single to right field brought home
Bailey Welch and
Riley Smith.
UNCG (2-0) used a four-run bottom of the fifth to take a 7-6 lead, and it scored two runs apiece in the next two innings.
Avers ended the game 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one walk. Smith finished 4-for-4 with two runs and one walk, while Welch scored three times.
Brandon Boone and
Kaleb Bowman made their App State debuts on the mound by working a combined three innings before
Will Herman pitched the bottom of the eighth.
Colin Schmid, Saturday's starter on the mound, allowed two earned runs in four innings of work.
