Box Score WILMINGTON, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis opened up the 2018 campaign on Saturday with a 5-2 loss to UNC Wilmington at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
The Mountaineers (0-1) secured the doubles point for an early 1-0 advantage, but dropped five singles matches to give UNCW its second victory of the year.
Scott Webster and
Milo Bargeron, the No. 1 Appalachian tandem that posted a team-best 9-3 mark a year ago, continued their doubles success with a 6-4 defeat of Ignasi De Ruedo and Raphael Calzi. Minutes later,
Campbell Stone and
Spencer Brown clinched the doubles victory with their own 6-4 win over Andres Torres and Gio Araujo.

Ben Webster made his spring debut alongside sophomore
Alex Pavkovich. The underclassmen duo fell 6-2 in the Mountaineers' only doubles loss of the day.
In singles action, the Seahawks (2-1) combined to claim five first sets and would eventually secure the match with four two-set victories. Pavkovich was the lone Mountaineer to win his respective first set and App State's only singles point, 6-4, 7-6. No. 61
Scott Webster bounced back in his respective second set, but was defeated 10-7 in the tie-break set.
Appalachian will head to Spartanburg, S.C., next Saturday, Jan. 27 to play USC Upstate. The following day, the Mountaineers will host Lees-Mcrae and North Carolina A&T at the Appalachian Tennis Courts.
