BOONE, N.C. -- Sophomore
Jordan Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C./East Forsyth) set a new school record in the long jump, leading the Appalachian State men's track and field team to the team championship at the Appalachian Open.
The Mountaineers finished with 119 points, Lenoir-Rhyne was second with 72 points and Gardner Webb was third with 67 points.
Johnson posted a leap of 25-2.00, bettering the previous school record of 25-1.25 set by Michael Hanks in 1987. His mark also sits seventh in the nation.
Senior
Ryan Hastings (Mathews, N.C./Porter Ridge) captured the 400-meter dash in 48.96 seconds. Freshman
John Fravel (Roswell, Ga./Milton) won the 800-meter dash in 1:57.14.
Sophomore
Elliott Graves (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham Early College) won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.69 seconds with junior
Brandon Smith (Fayetteville, N.C./Douglas Byrd) finishing second in 7.73 seconds.
In the high jump, sophomore
Jordan Dale (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) cleared 6-9.00 to finish first and sophomore
Daniel Lauffenburger (Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) was third with a mark of 6-5.00.
The pole vault saw junior
Michael Utecht (New Hill, N.C./Apex) finish first clearing 16-3.25 with junior
Tristian Shaver (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) placing second with a mark of 16-1.25.
Sophomore
Sean Doyle (Rutherford, N.C./Polk County) was third in the 1-mile run in 4:36.88 and freshman
Luke Bennett (Durham, N.C./Voyager Academy) crossed third in the 3,000-meter run in 9:06.15.
Appalachian State will compete again on January 26 and 27 at the Marshall Invitational.
