NEW ORLEANS - For his stellar weekend, Appalachian State University men's soccer freshman
Juan Hernandez was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
For the Mountaineers, it's the second time in as many weeks a student-athlete was recognized for their performance on offense, as
Daniel Avila was named Co-Offensive Athlete of the Week last Tuesday.
Hernandez garners the honor after scoring a career-high two goals in just the second match of his career. What's even more impressive, is that the freshman played 61 minutes off the bench to help lift App to a 2-1 victory over Central Arkansas after scoring what eventually became
the game-winning knock. All three of Hernandez' shot attempts were on target while all five attempts took place in the two matches over the weekend, and finished with a .667 shot on goal percentage to help App post a 1-0-1 mark.
Hernandez leads Appalachian in goals (2) and points (4) through the first four games, which has contributed to a solid 2-1-1 start for the Black and Gold going into the Sept. 9 clash at 7 p.m. against ETSU at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
