BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis senior
Scott Webster was invited to participate in the prestigious Oracle ITA Master's Tournament hosted by Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.
"I was a bit shocked when I received the invitation for the tournament because of the quality of players that play every year," Webster said. "In saying though, I'm absolutely stoked to be going to Malibu to represent the Sun Belt and App State. It will be fun competing against the caliber of talent on such a big stage."
Webster is just one of 32 tennis athletes from across the nation and the lone athlete from the Sun Belt to take part in the four-day tournament that begins on Thursday. One student-athlete represents each conference at the tournament along with six automatic bids.
"We couldn't be more happy for Scott to get this opportunity against some of the nation's best," head coach
Bob Lake stated. "His invitation to the Oracle Master's shows the work he puts into the game of tennis, and we know he'll represent App State and the Sun Belt very well in California this week."
The Sun Belt couldn't have a better representative as he is a stellar 45-12 in singles play and boasts a 37-19 mark in doubles competition. Through three seasons, Webster has won postseason awards such as Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year in 2015, an all-Sun Belt First Team nod last season in both singles and doubles play and collected an all-Sun Belt doubles selection in singles and doubles competition in his sophomore campaign.
In addition to his success on the court, Webster also has shown the same work ethic off the court, where he helped App win the inaugural Mountaineer Cup for 2015-16, exemplifying on-court success, succeeding in the classroom and going above and beyond in the community,
Going into his final year, Webster was one of 12 representatives from the Sun Belt to be named to the Sun Belt Leadership Team and is involved heavily in the App State community, where he is the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President and is a part of the BB&T Emerging Leaders.
