Ask The A.D., Fall Kickoff Edition

Each month, Appalachian State fans and supporters can reach out to Director of Athletics Doug Gillin with questions regarding Appalachian State Athletics. Fans can reach out via email at AskTheAD@appstate.edu.

SEPTEMBER 13, 2017 – ASK THE A.D.

Q: We weren't able to make the football team's home opener against Savannah State, but we'll be there for the Wake Forest game on Sept. 23. Can you hit some high notes on what's changed at Kidd Brewer Stadium since we were last there?

The football team has an important Sun Belt Conference opener at Texas State this weekend, and we're also excited that the long-awaited Wake Forest game is (almost) here, with a kickoff time (3:30 p.m. at The Rock) and channel (ESPN3) now set.

The clear bag policy at Kidd Brewer Stadium went into effect before last weekend's home opener, and we're working to make the process smoother from Game 1 to Game 2. A helpful breakdown of what's allowed and what's not allowed can be found here

I'd also like to remind fans that permits are now required for cars to enter Stadium Drive from the bottom of the hill at Rivers Street or the top of the hill on game days.

If the Wake Forest game will be your first trip to Kidd Brewer Stadium this year or your first trip period, a food truck from The Cardinal and a location for J&J'S Hawaiian Ice have joined the list of vendors inside the stadium. Official "Game Day" shirts are available in the concourse near the entrance to the Appalachian Athletics Center, and the campus bookstore again has a location near the ticket plaza to sell shirts and other items.

We're proud to offer App fans more options than they've ever had before. A full rundown of what's new for App State game days in 2017 can be found here:

Q: The video board is impressive, but can something be done to lower the speaker volume?

The football team played great last weekend and the scoreboard looked great, but there are ways to make the fan experience even better. We received positive feedback on the volume, and we heard feedback that the board was too loud. We will continue to work to find the best volume levels. It may be that we have it louder during the opening festivities and lower during the game, as an example.

Many of you want to hear more from our talented marching band and bring back the pregame fireworks that are part of the team's tunnel entrance. Those messages have been received, and we will have fireworks for all remaining home games. We will continue to work with the band to find the right mix of its songs and music through the video board.

Q: The gold helmets were a nice touch for the Gold Out. Will we see them again this season?

We still have not decided when or if we will wear the gold helmets again this season, and some folks have asked if they can purchase them.

There is a plan in the works to auction off the gold helmets later this year. When those plans become official, we'll let everyone know so they have a chance to secure a unique piece of Mountaineer memorabilia.?

We look forward to a great fall season for all of our teams, and I encourage fans to join me in attending multiple games, meets and matches to support those programs, student-athletes and coaches.
