Volleyball to Host Appalachian Invitational

BOONE, N.C.  — Appalachian State University volleyball will welcome East Tennessee State, Towson and Virginia to the High Country for the Appalachian Invitational this weekend.

Virginia vs. ETSU - 4 p.m.
Towson vs. App State - 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 2
Virginia vs. Towson - 10 a.m.
ETSU vs. App State - 12:30 p.m.
Towson vs. ETSU - 4 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE MOUNTAINEERS
Appalachian will enter the weekend after winning its previous two matches for a Springhill Suites Mayfaire Invitational championship in Wilmington last weekend. The Mountaineers defeated Loyola and UNCW for its two victories of the season.

Three Mountaineers were named to the all-tournament team, including the reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Week, Kara Spicer. Spicer tallied 56 kills in her first weekend for the Black & Gold with a .372 hitting percentage and was named the tournament MVP. Melissa McMath and Olivia Loeffler joined her on the all-tournament team. McMath led the Mountaineers in kills in both wins, while Loeffler set a new career-high in digs with 33 in the win over UNCW.

SCOUTING EAST TENNESSEE STATE
The Buccaneers enter the weekend with an 0-3 record and seeking their first win of the season. ETSU lost three matches in the LUV Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., to Lipscomb, Arizona and Wichita State.

Rylee Milhorn has led the squad with 29 kills, while Alyssa Kvarta leads with 51 assists. The Buccaneers have three players with at least 20 digs in Hailey Aguilar (35), Leah Clayton (30) and Milhorn (24).

SCOUTING TOWSON
The Tigers will come into the weekend with a 3-0 record after finishing up the Western Carolina Tournament in Cullowhee last weekend. Towson swept Jacksonville State in three sets before defeating Western Carolina and Charleston Southern in four sets.

Jocelyn Kuilan is leading the Tigers this season with 42 kills and 3.82 kills per set. Marissa Wonders has paced the Towson offense and has amassed 88 assists to lead the team. Defensively, Towson is lead by Anna Holehouse with 79 digs.

SCOUTING VIRGINIA
The Cavaliers will enter the Appalachian Invitational with a 2-1 record after finishing their own season-opening tournament with wins over Hofstra and Liberty. Virginia's only loss came to Villanova in the Fairfield Inn & Suites Cavalier Classic finale.

Sarah Billiard leads the Cavaliers thus far with 37 kills and 3.36 kills per set. Jennifer Wineholt leads Virginia with 74 assists. On the defensive side of things, Kelsey Miller has a team-high 46 digs.
