Kara Spicer Praised by Sun Belt for Strong Weekend

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University volleyball's freshman middle blocker Kara Spicer was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.

Spicer was also named the Springhill Suites Mayfaire Invitational MVP for her performances over the weekend in Wilmington, N.C.

"It's not often that a freshman can put up the numbers that Kara put up over four matches," said head coach Matt Ginipro. "I thought she had a great weekend, and to get a tournament MVP and Freshman of the Week in her first time-out is pretty impressive."

In her Mountaineer debut last Friday, she tallied 15 kills in a five-set loss to Missouri State in the season opener. She also led App State offensively in the match against Davidson, as the freshman racked up 17 kills while not committing an attack error.

In a 3-1 win over UNC Wilmington, the Peoria, Ariz. native had 11 kills, including back-to-back kills in the final set that sealed the first App State victory of the 2017 season.

On Sunday, she collected 13 more kills with five blocks and currently ranks second overall in the Sun Belt with 56 total kills and her .372 hitting percentage ranks sixth.

Spicer and the Mountaineers return to action Friday night at 7 p.m. to host Towson in the Appalachian Invitational. The tournament also features East Tennessee State and Virginia.
