BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State reported for fall camp in preparation for the 2017 season
on Sunday afternoon. Practice opens
on Monday as the Mountaineers have a handful of acclimation practices before contact begins later in the week.
The 2017 season is the most anticipated since the Mountaineers made the jump to the FBS level. App State went 7-1 in the Sun Belt last season and clinched a share of the conference championship, the program's first since the FCS to FBS move. A season opener at Georgia on ESPN (
Sept. 2) awaits the Apps at the end of fall camp. App pushed then-No. 9 Tennessee to overtime in a 20-13 loss to open the 2016 season in an opener that could have a similar feel
in five weeks.
App State head football coach
Scott Satterfield (32-18 overall) begins his fifth season at the helm of the App program. The Mountaineers have been one of the hottest programs in college football over the last two-and-a-half seasons, going 27-5 since a six-game winning streak to close out 2014. For Satterfield, the chemistry needed for back-to-back 10-win seasons and becoming the first program in history to win bowl games in its first two eligible seasons at the FBS level comes from the effort level leading up to and during August.
"Our goal in camp is always the same; we want to become the best that we can be at what we do by the time
Sept. 2 arrives," Satterfield said
on Sunday. "We have a number of veterans back and we know what they'll give us, but we have a lot of new guys who need to develop quickly. This is just an exciting time of year getting out here and preparing to play games."
A veteran-laden lineup including the reigning Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year in running back
Jalin Moore and senior quarterback
Taylor Lamb, who is second with 27 wins as a starter among FBS quarterbacks, are part of what is expected to be a versatile offense.
Five preseason All-Sun Belt selections including 2016 freshman All-American corner
Clifton Duck and senior linebacker
Eric Boggs, the team's leading tackler a season ago, lead a veteran defense that was among the nation's best in a number of key categories in '16, including leading the FBS in points allowed in conference play.
App State will host Media Day
on Saturday with the 2017 team photo kicking things off at
10 a.m. and Head Coach
Scott Satterfield's press conference set for a
noon luncheon with the local and regional media.
