The Apps gave the Tar Heels of UNC all they could handle in Chapel Hill on Sunday, holding them to a season-low 56 points and 29.8 shooting from the floor. Appalachian took a 33-31 lead in the third quarter but was outscored, 25-13, the rest of the way for the setback.
LaPresha Stanley perhaps had her best all-around performance of her young career with a team-high points and career bests in rebounds (8) and assists (6).
Maya Calder also had her best game of the season with a career-high eight points and six off the glass, while
Bayley Plummer amassed a game-high 15 boards and played stellar defense inside the paint as she held Janelle Bailey to just 1-for-10 shooting from the field and three turnovers.
Wilson Amongst the Best Freshmen
Wilson's team-high 11.4 points per game is 15th in the Sun Belt and third amongst all freshmen, while she also leads the team in assists per contest at 2.8, which is 13th in the league and the most amongst first-year players. Her 36.4 minutes per game is first in the SBC and the fourth-highest average throughout the country for freshmen. She has played the entire 40 minutes in two out of the past three games and at least 38 minutes in four contests.
What to Watch For
• The Mountaineers are outrebounding
their foes by an average of 40.7-37.3 in the last three games including 46 offensive rebounds (15.3 per game) and 12.3 second-chance points. Appalachian held a 46-42 edge, and 11-7 advantage in second-chance points at UNC. See if App can set the tone on the glass against a WF team that has a plus-6.0 margin in rebounding.
• In Wake Forest's five losses this season, opponents are averaging 18.6 points per game at the free throw line, while teams are scoring just scoring an average of 8.5 in the Deacons' four wins. App State shot a season-low five free throws at UNC. See if The Black and Gold can get to the line and take advantage of the opportunities.
• Appalachian has averaged 18 turnovers per game in the past three contests, which is better than the overall average of the Mountaineers' 22 miscues per contest. The Demon Deacons force opponents to commit just 15.4 turnovers per game. See if App can continue the trend of committing fewer mistakes.
• Stanley is averaging 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists over the last three games. The freshman had her best all-around game against UNC with nine points and career highs in rebounds (8) and assists (6). Watch if Stanley can continue her solid play.
• Opponents are averaging 67.4 points per game against the Demon Deacons. See if the App offense can get going after scoring just 43 points in Chapel Hill on Sunday.
Scouting Wake Forest
• The Demon Deacons have responded after a four-game skid to capture back-to-back wins against Elon and Xavier.
• WF dealt the Musketeers a 63-57 defeat on Monday night in Cincinnati.
• Jen Hoover is in her sixth season at the helm, where she is 78-92 all-time at WF.
• WF is fourth in the ACC in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 29.2 percent from the floor.
• Four players led by Elisa Penna (11.7 ppg) are scoring in double figures. Alex Sharp leads the team in rebounding at a clip of eight per game and a team-high 30 assists.
• Wake Forest gives up the second-most points per possession on defense at .897 points
• WF is allowing teams to shoot 18.7 free throws per contest, which is the most in the ACC, while the 14 points allowed per game is also an ACC high.
• The Deacons are 13th in the ACC in field goal percentage at 39.2 percent
Series History
• App State's 10 wins against Wake Forest is the most against any ACC school.
• The Mountaineers and Demon Deacons are playing each other for the first time since the 2010-11 season when App took home a 64-57 victory in Winston-Salem.
• If App wins on Thursday, it will be the first ACC win since 2011-12 when the Apps defeated NC State on the road in the WNIT.
