NORMAN, Okla. — Appalachian State's wrestling team stormed back to win four straight matches and take a lead at No. 20 Oklahoma, but the Sooners claimed the last three matches to earn a 19-13 victory in McCasland Field House on Sunday.
The Mountaineers (3-3) were behind 9-0 before they moved ahead 13-9 thanks to wins from
Forrest Przybysz (sudden-victory decision between two ranked wrestlers at 174 pounds),
Alan Clothier (decision at 184),
Randall Diabe (decision at 197) and
Cary Miller (four-point major decision at heavyweight).
App State still had a 13-12 lead after true freshman
De'Andre Swinson-Barr put up a strong fight in a 6-3 loss to 17th-ranked Christian Moody at 125 pounds, and a major decision at 133 pounds allowed the Sooners (2-2) to take a 16-13 lead into the final match. Oklahoma senior Mike Longo won an 8-6 decision against
Irvin Enriquez, who tied the match at 5-all before Longo used a takedown to enter the third period with a 7-5 advantage.
The Sooners totaled 58 points in the 10 matches, and Appalachian had 56.
The Mountaineers had two one-point losses in the first three completed matches, and the 20th-ranked Przybysz used a sudden-victory takedown against 11th-ranked senior Yoanse Mejias to record the 4-2 victory. Przybysz improved to 12-4 on the season and dropped Mejias to 14-5.
Clothier picked up his team-leading 14th victory of the season with an 11-5 decision against Matt Waddell, and App State tied the match when Diabe claimed a 5-2 decision against Andrew Dixon. Diabe led 3-1 after two periods, allowed a point on an escape and used a takedown for the final margin.
Miller broke the tie and produced four points for the Mountaineers with a 14-4 major decision against Conor Webb. The victory gave Miller a 12-6 record this season.
The Mountaineers return to action at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., from Jan. 1-2.
