ROANOKE, Va. — Appalachian State had five wrestlers post top-four finishes at the Hokie Open on Sunday in Roanoke, Va.
North Carolina totaled 155.5 points to lead the open division standings, and App State was second in the 21-team field with 118 points, nine more than third-place Stanford's total.
Competing at the Berglund Center, the Mountaineers were led at 149 pounds by a second-place showing from
Gavin Londoff. Wrestling unattached, App State team member Matt Zovistoski was third.
Londoff went 4-0 with two one-point victories before falling 2-1 in the second tiebreak period to North Carolina's Troy Heilmann in the open division final.
App State got fourth-place finishes from
Forrest Przybysz (174 pounds),
Thomas Flitz (165) and
Bradley Irwin (141) in their open brackets. In the freshman/sophomore division,
Isaiah Johnson was second at 157 pounds by winning three times before he lost 7-4 to Army's Beau Guffey in the final.
The other top open bracket results came from
Irvin Enriquez (fifth, 141),
Angel Najar (fifth, 165),
Alan Clothier (fifth, 184),
Taylor Jackson (sixth, 184) and
Cary Miller (sixth, 285). In the freshman/sophomore bracket, App State also had top-six results from
Codi Russell (fourth, 133) and
Paul Carson (sixth, 197).
Londoff won 8-0 against Duke's Brandon Leynaud, 4-3 against UNC's Austin O'Connor, 6-2 against Davidson's Aidan Conroy and 3-2 against Campbell's Joshua Heil.
Przybysz reached the semifinal round at 174 with a 9-0 win against Army's Graham Ratermann and a 7-1 victory against Virginia Tech's Cody Hughes. He dropped a 3-2 decision in the semifinal against eventual champion Keaton Subjeck of Stanford.
Flitz reached his 165 semifinal with a 6-5 decision against UNC's Clay Lautt and a 5-3 decision against Gardner-Webb's Brett Stein.
Irwin advanced to the 141 semifinal with a 3-1 decision against VMI's Dominick Gallo and a 7-5 decision against UNC's Nicholas Lirette.
Zovistoski won his first two matches, lost 3-2 to Heilmann in the semifinals and won 3-2 against Campbell's Joshua Heil in the third-place match. Zovistoski advanced to the semifinals by winning 3-0 against Stanford's Requir Van der merwe and 10-2 against UNC's Sawyer Davidson.
App State returns to action Saturday by facing Bloomsburg (noon) and Southern Conference foe Davidson (2 p.m.) in the Mountaineer Duals at Varsity Gym. Wrestling tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the Appalachian State ticket office at
