Mountaineers to Face UTEP in Final Game of Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach

CONWAY, S.C. -- Appalachian State men's basketball will close out play at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against UTEP. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

THE SERIES
  • This will be the second ever meeting between the two schools, with the Miners holding a 1-0 edge.
  • UTEP defeated App State 58-52 in the 1985-86 season.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • Appalachian State stands at 2-2 on the season after dropping a 86-67 decision to Western Michigan on Friday.
  • Four players reached double figures for the Mountaineers. Ronshad Shabazz tallied 25 points, Justin Forrest scored 13 points in a reserve role, Isaac Johnson had 12 points and Griffin Kinney chipped in with 10 points.
  • Shabazz has scored at least 24 points in all four Mountaineer contests this season. He currently has scored 978 points in his career and is just 22 points shy of becoming the 32nd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
  • Forrest has reached double figures in three of the first four games for Appalachian, including both contests at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach.
  • Isaac Johnson is pulling down a team-best 7.8 rpg and has recorded six or more rebounds in three of App State's first four contests. He is also averaging 7.8 ppg.
SCOUTING THE MINERS
  • UTEP stands at 1-2 on the season after falling to South Carolina 80-56 on Friday.
  • Matt Willms led the Miners with 18 points and six rebounds in the loss, while Omega Harris tallied 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
  • On the season, Keith Frazier is pouring in a team-best 14.7 ppg and ranks second on UTEP in rebounding at 6.7 rpg.
  • Willms is pulling down a team-high 7.0 rpg and is also averaging double figures at 13.7 ppg.
