POSTGAME NOTES (APPALACHIAN STATE 45, NEW MEXICO STATE 31)
Â
Taylor Lamb improved to 30-11 as a starter, tying D.J. Campbell (30-17 from 1989-92) for the second-most wins by a starting quarterback in school history. Armanti Edwards was 42-7.
Appalachian State's six interceptions set a school record and tied the record for the most interceptions by a defense in a game involving two Sun Belt Conference teams. The previous App State record of five occurred against Elon in 1968 and Mississippi College in 1991. Utah State was a Sun Belt member when it intercepted six Arkansas State passes in 2003.
Â
In the same game,
Tae Hayes and
Clifton Duck tied the App State single-game record for interceptions. Mark LeGree had three against Wofford in 2008, and Larry McKenzie had three against Davidson in 1973.
Â
Hayes, a junior, now has four career interceptions. Duck, a sophomore, increased his career total to nine.
Â
App State erased a fourth-quarter deficit in a home win for the first time since its 31-29 victory against UL Monroe in 2014. In that game, UL Monroe scored a go-ahead touchdown with 1:42 left, and App State's
Bentlee Critcher made a 39-yard field goal with 29 seconds left. The Mountaineers trailed in overtime but not in the fourth quarter of a triple-overtime victory against Troy in 2015 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Jalin Moore is currently the only active FBS back with three games of at least 240 rushing yards, as he gained 244 at Idaho in 2015 and a career-high 257 at Akron last season. Entering Saturday, Tulsa's D'Angelo Brewer, LSU's Derris Guice and Stanford's Bryce Love had two games with at least 240 yards.
Â
App State scored 31 of its first 38 points off the first five New Mexico State turnovers.
Â
Similar to what he did at Texas State, redshirt senior linebacker
Rashaad Townes forced a fumble on a sack against New Mexico State. Townes posted two sacks to increase his career total to four.
Â
Duck and
Tee Sims also recorded sacks against the Aggies. It was the first career sack for Duck, as the 11-yard loss forced New Mexico State to punt in the second quarter.
Â
Senior tight end
Bill Cecil, who received a scholarship during preseason camp, made his first career start. He was on the field as part of a set with fellow tight end
Levi Duffield, as the Mountaineers had two receivers on the field instead of three.
