About the Mountaineers
App State returns five student-athletes from last season's 12-19 team that would go on to capture its first-ever Sun Belt Tournament victory over Coastal Carolina in the first round. The Mountaineer returnees include leading scorer and rebounder, Madi Story, who registered a career-high 13.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She also canned a personal-high 38 3 pointers, becoming the only player in the Sun Belt to lead her team in all three categories. Bayley Plummer and Armani Hampton were viable options off the bench last season, as Plummer averaged 5.5 rebounds per game and 0.7 blocks per contest. Plummer showed glimpses of being a force down low where she turned in two double-doubles and three double-digit rebounding efforts, which all came in conference play. Hampton got it going at the end of the season that was highlighted by a personal-high 14 points in her first-career start against UL Monroe. Katelyn Doub and Kaila Craven will look to stretch the floor this season with their 3-point shooting. Doub also had her best performance in her only start with a season-high seven points against ULM, while Craven led the team and all freshmen in the Sun Belt with 41 3-pointers in 2015-16, while her 9.2 points per game were the most amongst freshmen in the league and third on the Mountaineers.
Youth Movement
After losing five seniors to graduation last season, coach Elderkin and the staff brought in eight newcomers, seven of which are eligible this season. Ashley Polacek recently transferred from UCF and has to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules. All seven of the Mountaineers in Maya Calder, Tierra Wilson, Nicola Mathews, LaPresha Stanley, Anna Perez Gomez, Lainey Gosnell and Dominique Jeffery will look to contribute right away.
Scouting Tusculum
Tusculum returns leading scorer, Kasey Johnson, who averaged 15.8 points per game last season. The Pioneers also return their second-leading scorer in Callie Patterson (9.2 ppg). Tusculum posted a 6-20 mark last season with five of its wins in conference play. Appalachian and Tusculum are playing each other for the first time
