OCTOBER 20, 2017 – ASK THE A.D.
Q: In the past, fans who stayed until the end of games were allowed on the field after the game ended. What is the 2017 policy?
We appreciate the fans who show up to Kidd Brewer Stadium, and coach
Scott Satterfield noted how helpful the crowd was by being loud in the fourth quarter of a close game with New Mexico State. We want you to not only arrive early, but to stay for all 60 minutes because your support makes a big difference for our football team.
This year, fans were permitted to enter the field after the first home game, and they will be allowed to do the same following the home finale against Louisiana on Dec. 2.
Q: Are there any rules preventing replays from being shown on the video board during or after an officials' review?
A play can be shown as long as it meets certain criteria, per Sun Belt Conference rules, and there were nearly 100 replays shown during the New Mexico State game on Oct. 7.
From the league office: "When a stoppage occurs for an official review, the in-stadium video board operator must use the unaltered television network program feed as the exclusive video source for replays of the play under review. No live coverage of any coach, student-athlete or fan reaction may be shown from the program feed during the review. Replays from the program feed are permitted only between Referee announcements to stop play and to communicate the outcome of the review. No replays from any other video source may be shown on the in-stadium video board during stoppage for an official review."
With the improved video quality on our new board, we are continually evaluating how to strike the proper balance between using it to enhance the game day experience for fans and maintaining order to help the game officials do their jobs as efficiently, accurately and professionally as possible.
Q: I want Kidd Brewer Stadium to be a hostile environment for visiting teams, but I want other fans and teams to leave saying we were respectful in how we did it. What's your advice on how to accomplish both?
The passion of our students and fans is a big part of what makes a game day at Kidd Brewer Stadium special. It's important to channel that passion in the right way.
Be loud, but do it with CLASS, because Champions Love Appalachian State Spirit.
C — Clean Up After Yosef! Take pride in our beautiful campus and leave it better than when you arrived.
L — Let your actions represent the best of Appalachian State.
A — Always be positive in your support of our team, coaches and players and wear your Black and Gold.
S — Show respect for our visitors and game officials. Cheer loudly, but with appropriate language.
S — Show respect for yourself and fellow Mountaineers – especially young fans.
We don't need to resort to inappropriate gestures or chants to make playing in Kidd Brewer Stadium difficult for an opponent. And our coaches and players need your support, both when times are good and when times are tough. They're working tirelessly to represent Appalachian State in a first-class way, and your encouragement gives them the best chance to perform at their best.
Thank you for making The Rock a fun, lively place to experience college football at the highest level. With season ticket sales strong and a record-breaking total of 35,126 fans in attendance for the Wake Forest game, the crowds have been great this year at Kidd Brewer Stadium, and we expect another big turnout for Saturday's game with reserved seats sold out for Family Weekend. There are still some general admission tickets available, so let's fill Kidd Brewer Stadium again to cheer on our first-place Mountaineers.
Q: What's ahead in the next few weeks?
Great things are happening with our fall sports, and don't miss the chance to see the crowning of Sun Belt Conference champs when the cross country championships are held in Boone at the State Farm Fields and Kennedy Trails on Saturday, Oct. 28.
The women's 5K race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 11 a.m., and our App State women are the reigning conference champions. Come out and make this a true home-course advantage for our young, talented men's team and give the women the support that will help them repeat as Sun Belt champs.
