Mountaineers Open Conference Play at Ohio

BOONE – The App State Field Hockey team open MAC league play at Ohio on Friday at noon. The Mountaineers (3-3) are looking to stay in the win column, last defeating the Davidson Wildcats on Sept. 15. Friday's matchup against Ohio (3-3) is the first conference game of the season for the Mountaineers.

Last Time Out
The Mountaineers defeated the Davidson Wildcats to a score of 7-2 last Sunday. Sophia Baxter and Florine Koopman both found the back of the cage twice in Sunday's matchup. The Mountaineers scored four goals in the third period, the most in program history. Koopman was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week for her performance against Davidson for the first time in her collegiate career.
 
Scouting the Mountaineers  
The Mountaineers have pressed the attack, leading the MAC with 117 shots and 39 corners. App State finds the back of the cage more than any other team in the conference, with 17 goals scored so far. 
 
The Mountaineers have been all over the weekly MAC awards, with three players earning recognition in three weeks. 

Defensively, the Mountaineers have been stellar in opening the season. App State is one of two teams in the MAC to post a shutout, and the only team to post multiple on the season, defeating both Towson and Georgetown 3-0. 

The 2024 Mountaineer squad features six players who garnered All-MAC selections in 2023. Midfielder Lisa Boekaar earned All-MAC first-team honors, while the trio of Charlotte Bosma, Grace Ball and Sophia Baxter earned All-MAC second team honors. Florine Koopman and Sophia Baxter were also both named to the All-MAC Freshman team. The 2024 team will also feature six newcomers to the high country. Dinsmore was also awarded Co-Coach of the Year in her first season with the team. 
  
Scouting the Bobcats
Ohio enters this matchup against the Mountaineers after coming off an 6-10 (4-3 MAC) season in 2023. The Bobcats will be led by head coach Ali Johnstone, who is in her 7^th year with the program.
 
Series History
This is the 19^th matchup against Ohio, with a record of 8-10. The Mountaineers faced off against Ohio last year, where they defeated the Bobcats to a score of 3-2 in overtime. App State has won six straight against the Bobcats dating back to 2019.
