SANDESTIN, Fla. -
After a strong opening round Sunday, the putting greens were not as kind to Appalachian State during Monday's second round of the 2018 Sun Belt Women's Golf Championship, being held at The Raven Golf Club.
App State fell to a tie for eighth after a team round of 323 Monday, but the Mountaineers are still within reach of moving high up the leaderboard as only 17 strokes separate the 3-9 spots in the 11-team field.
"We really struggled with the flat stick today," head coach Heather Brown
said. "Some four-putts and multiple three-putts really set us back. We will regroup and come out fighting tomorrow."
Freshman Abby Bolt
shot a 7-over 78 for the team's low round of the day, followed by 79's from junior Joliana Elias
and sophomore Melany Chong
Elias, who fired an opening-round 72, goes into Tuesday's final round sitting in a tie for eighth place on the individual leaderboard. If she maintains or improves her place, it would be her second straight top-10 finish at the league championship. Her 26 pars through two rounds are tied for second-most in the field. Chong is currently tied for 20th in the individual standings after rounds of 76 and 79, and she is tied for eighth-best on par 5 scoring at 2-over.
App State will tee off at 8:10 a.m. for Tuesday's final round. The Mountaineers will be paired with Georgia State (currently T-6th) and South Alabama (currently T-8th) for the championship round.
Coastal Carolina improved on its team lead Monday and now leads second-place Troy by 23 strokes heading into the final round.
