Volleyball to Close Out Regular Season at Troy and South Alabama

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State will play its final two regular season contests on Friday and Sunday. The Mountaineers will battle Troy Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. EST and take on South Alabama on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. EST.

WHAT'S AT STAKE
The Mountaineers currently sit atop the Sun Belt East Division with an 11-3 mark and a one game lead over Coastal Carolina. The Black and Gold need to win one match this weekend or have Coastal Carolina lose once to clinch the division title and earn a double bye in the upcoming Sun Belt Tournament.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
App State has won six straight contests, with four coming as 3-0 sweeps. In a sweep of Georgia Southern on Sunday, Kara Spicer hit .444 and registered 15 kills, while Emma Longley tallied 13 kills on a .229 hitting mark. Becky Porter added 42 assists and seven digs, while Emma Reilly tallied 10 digs. Porter currently leads the league in assists per set, averaging 10.78. Longley ranks second on the league in kills per set (3.90) and third in total kills (355). Reilly sits second in the Sun Belt in service aces per set (0.40) and third in digs per set (4.38). 

SUN BELT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
For their efforts last weekend, Becky Porter was named Sun Belt Setter of the Week and Kara Spicer was tabbed as Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week. Porter earns her third Sun Belt Setter of the Week honor, after winning the award twice in September. In a pair of sweeps on the weekend, Porter dished out 81 assists (13.5 a/s), while adding seven kills and 15 digs. In a win on Friday over Georgia State, she dished out 39 assists (13.0 a/s) to go along with three kills, eight digs and two blocks. She followed that up with a 42-assist (14.0 a/s), four-kill and seven-dig effort in a win over Georgia Southern on Friday. Spicer earned her first Sun Belt Player of the Week honor. In a pair of Mountaineer sweeps this weekend, Spicer posted 26 kills (4.33 k/s) on a sizzling .477 hitting mark. She added six blocks and four service aces. On Friday, she tallied 11 kills, against just two errors on 17 attempts, for a .529 hitting percentage as the Mountaineers swept past Georgia State. She also notched three services aces in the win. Spicer followed with 15 kills and a .444 hitting mark, while adding four blocks in an App State sweep of Georgia Southern.

SCOUTING THE TROJANS
Troy dropped to 10-17 on the season and 4-10 in Sun Belt play after falling to South Alabama 3-1 on Saturday. Cheyenne Hayes posted a team-high 18 kills for the Trojans. Amara Anderson notched a double-double with 41 assists and a team-high tying 12 digs. SaraGrace Wilson also had 12 digs and Lacey Jeffcoat finished with 11 digs. Hayes has posted the second most kills in the conference (386) and ranks fourth in kills per set (3.71). Anderson leads the conference with 1,098 total assists and sits second, averaging 10.56 assists per set.

SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
South Alabama topped Troy 3-1 on Saturday to move to 13-14 on the season and 7-7 in Sun Belt play. Hannah Harris and Meaghan Jones each posted 16 kills in the win. Harris was one of three Jaguars to reach double digit digs with 10. Ashlyn Roberts recorded a team-high 16 digs and Rachel DeMarcus had a double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs. As a team, South Alabama is hitting .225 this season, which ranks third in the Sun Belt.

THE SERIES
App State holds a 7-1 lead in the all-time series against Troy, winning 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20) in Boone on Oct. 28. South Alabama holds a slim 5-4 edge in the all-time series. The Black and Gold swept past the Jaguars 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 on Oct. 26 in Boone.

UP NEXT
Appalachian State will set its sights on the Sun Belt Tournament in Atlanta. The Mountaineers can be no worse than the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The conference will announce the full tournament schedule on Sunday.
