BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's basketball suffered a loss to Troy on Saturday afternoon, 108-87.
The Mountaineers (10-11, 5-7 Sun Belt) scored 87 points, but could not stop the Trojans (13-9, 8-5) who had season-high of 108 points.
The Trojans took a quick lead, scoring 16 points in the first five minutes of the game to lead 16-8. The Mountaineers went on a run, scoring 11 points to the Trojan's three to tie the game, 21-21 at the 12:52 minute mark.
The Trojans took another lead, but a Farrahn Wood three-pointer would help the Apps trail by just three points, 29-26. Troy did not miss many shots, take a 39-29 lead with 7:37 to play in the first half. The Trojans scored 20 more points in the last six minutes of the first half, leading 59-43 at halftime.
Katie Mallow led the Apps in the first half with 13 points, while the team shot 50.0 percent from the floor.
The Trojans were led by Ronita Garrett's 18 points in the first as the team recorded a 62.9 field goal percentage.
Troy continued to score in the second half, going on 12-3 run to lead 71-46 at the 14:55 minute mark. The Mountaineers managed to respond with six-straight points, four coming from Bria Huffman, but the Trojans found baskets to lead 77-55 with 11:14 to play.
With ten minutes left in the game Appalachian went on an 13-6 run to cut the lead to 83-68, but once again the Trojans fought back by scoring ten of the next 12 points.
The Trojans scored their 100th point with three minutes to play, for a 100-79 lead and the Mountaineers eventually fell, 108-87.
App State was led by Huffman's 17 points and Mallow's 16 in the loss. Ashley Bassett-Smith chipped in a career-high 14 points, while Joi Jones added 13.
The team shot 50.0 percent from the floor, grabbing 42 rebounds and turning the ball over 22 times.
Garrett finished the game with 28 points, while Ashley Beverly-Kelley had 25 for Troy. The Trojans shot 57.9 percent from the field, recording 35 rebounds and 18 turnovers.
The Apps return to action on Thursday, Feb. 12 when they host UALR at 5 p.m.
