Spring Practice Report: Wednesday, March 24
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University football held its final intrasquad scrimmage of the spring on Wednesday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Practicing outdoors for just the third time in 14 workouts this spring, Appalachian scrimmaged for approximately 75 plays on a warm, sunny afternoon.

As has been the case for most of the spring, ASU's defense held the upper hand for much of Wednesday's scrimmage. The defense limited its offensive counterparts to just two scoring drives in approximately 18 series on the afternoon.

Unlike the spring's previous scrimmage, when the Mountaineer defense surrendered just 2.8 yards per play but didn't force any turnovers, takeaways played a big part in Wednesday's defensive effort, as the defense took advantage of four offensive miscues.

Three of the four takeaways came in the form of interceptions, two of which were recorded by junior cornerback Ed Gainey. Gainey picked off junior quarterback DeAndre Presley twice — once by stepping in front of a pass intended for junior wide receiver Brian Quick and the second by winning a jumpball over senior receiver Blake Elder along the right sideline.

On the play immediately following Gainey's first interception, middle linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough got in on the act when he picked off a tipped pass thrown by redshirt freshman signal-caller Jamal Jackson and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.

The final turnover came when the defense recovered a fumbled snap on a third-and-two play near midfield.

While it was plagued by turnovers, the offense had a little more success moving the ball than it did in the squad's previous scrimmage. Senior running back Devon Moore continued to make the most of his relatively few touches with a number of big gains, highlighted by a 34-yard run off right tackle midway through the afternoon. That gallop was the Mountaineers' longest gain of the scrimmage, followed closely by a 32-yard pass from Presley to redshirt freshman Tony Washington, who spun his way out of several tackles en route to the long pickup.

ASU's two scores came on a 15-yard pass from Jackson to Quick and a one-yard dive by junior running back Cedric Baker.

Appalachian will hold its 15th and final practice of the spring on Thursday afternoon.
