BOONE, N.C. -- Friday marked the fifth anniversary of the legendary "Miracle on the Mountain" finish to the 2002 chapter of the Appalachian State-Furman rivalry. On October 12, 2002, fourth-ranked Appalachian took a 14-9 lead over No. 5 Furman on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burchette to Joey Hoover late in the fourth quarter. However, FU marched 73 yards on 13 plays on the ensuing possession, capped by a 12-yard touchdown connection from Billy Napier to Bear Rinehart with only seven seconds remaining in the contest. With a 15-14 lead, Furman head coach Bobby Lamb elected to attempt a two-point conversion. The "Go For 2" decision turned out to be a fateful one for Lamb and the Paladins, as ASU's Josh Jeffries intercepted Napier's pass on the two-point attempt. Jeffries returned the interception 12 yards to the ASU 16 before lateraling to speedy teammate Derrick Black. With Jeffries and Nygel Rogers paving the way, Black avoided two would-be tacklers and carried the ball to paydirt, giving the Mountaineers an improbable 16-15 lead. The Apps went on to recover Furman's last-ditch onsides kick attempt to claim one of the most memorable victories in college football history. The play was celebrated as one of ESPN's top 10 plays of the week and David Jackson and Avery Hall's call on the Appalachian Sports Network was honored by ABC Sports as its Radio Call of the Year. Spurred by the "Miracle on the Mountain", Appalachian has won five of the last six meetings with Furman. ASU avenged the only defeat in that stretch, a last-second, 34-31 heartbreaker during the 2005 regular season, with a 29-23 victory in that season's national semifinals. ASU and FU renew their exciting rivalry on Oct. 27 in Greenville, S.C. The contest, slated to be televised live on SportSouth, kicks off at 3 p.m. RAUCH HONORED BY HIGH SCHOOL: On Friday night, Ashbrook H.S. in Gastonia, N.C. honored one of its most decorated alums when it retired the No. 11 worn by current Appalachian place-kicker Julian Rauch. Rauch converted 10 field-goal attempts for Ashbrook during the 2002 North Carolina 2A state playoffs, including game-winners in three of the final four games during AHS's run to the state championship. As a Mountaineer, Rauch has become the school's all-time leader in kick scoring with 301 career points. He became a household name nationwide when he kicked the game-winning 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds to go in Appalachian's 34-32 win over No. 5 (FBS) Michigan in this year's season opener.
