BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State softball continues their season in Cary, N.C. on Wednesday, April 11 for a midweek doubleheader against N.C. Central at Thomas Brooks Park.
The Apps are 13-21 overall as they look to pick up two more non-conference wins on the road against the Eagles. The Mountaineers are 10-2 all-time against N.C. Central with the most recent meeting in 2016.
The Mountaineer offense has stepped up this season with a .273 team batting average. The team totals 20 home runs so far this season with 148 runs scored.
In the Apps' most recent series,
Alisha Josey sent her sixth home run over the fence at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium in the game one.
Jenny Dodd and
Baylee Morton followed with back-to-back doubles. In game two, A. Josey blasted her second home run of the series and seventh overall. Dodd rattled Troy with a homer right afterward down the left field line. Dodd hit another home run in game three to start a 7-0 lead for the Mountaineers in the second inning.
In the Mountaineers' last meeting against the Eagles in May 2016, NCCU took both wins for their senior day. Both Dodd and
Megan Walker went 2-4 in the first game. In game two,
Heather Josey went 3-4. Walker went 1-2 including a triple to right field and Dodd went 2-3.
Scouting the Eagles
NCCU is 9-20 overall this season and 2-7 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Ava Dolan, a sophomore infielder, holds a .474 batting average, the only average above .300 for the Eagles. She also has eight home runs on the season.
Courtney Mirabella is a huge asset in the circle for the Eagles this season. She maintains a 2.13 ERA in her 134.2 innings. She has appeared in 23 games and started 19 as the Eagles' ace. NCCU also has
Claire Eosso, a former pitcher for App State in her first two years of eligibility. She has pitched 31 innings for the Eagles as a junior in the circle with a 10.84 ERA.
Last season as a Mountaineer, Eosso appeared in five games with 7.1 innings pitched. In her 2016 campaign at App, she had 26 appearances, six starts and 52 innings pitched.
