CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — With three wrestlers earning top-eight medals, short-handed Appalachian State placed 12th out of 25 teams by totaling 46 points at the two-day Southern Scuffle tournament won by Penn State.
Competing at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, App State senior and No. 7 seed
Forrest Przybysz finished fourth among the 30 entries in the 174-pound bracket. Redshirt freshman and No. 8 seed
Alan Clothier placed sixth in the 184-pound bracket, and unseeded sophomore
Laken Cook was eighth in the 157-pound bracket.
The 17th-ranked Przybysz went 5-2, reaching the quarterfinal round with a 2-0 start and winning his first three matches in the consolation bracket. He lost by fall against third-seeded and seventh-ranked Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa in the third-place match Tuesday night.
After a 1-1 start that included a tiebreaker loss, Clothier's four straight wins in the consolation bracket included a 4-3 decision against Northern Colorado's Dylan Gabel and a 3-2 decision against Utah Valley's Gary Jantzer. A loss to NC State's Nick Reenan put Clothier in the fifth-place match, where he lost to Navy's Michael Coleman, who is ranked 17th nationally.
Clothier went 5-3 at the Southern Scuffle, and Cook ended up with a 4-3 record following a loss to third-seeded Ian Brown of Lehigh in the seventh-place match. After a second-round loss put Cook in the consolation bracket, he capped a run of three straight wins by claiming a 6-4, sudden-victory decision against Gardner-Webb's Tyler Marinelli.
The Mountaineers, who had only six of their normal 10 starters participating, also benefited from two wins apiece Monday by
Irvin Enriquez (141 pounds),
Angel Najar (157) and
Bradley Irwin (141). Their overall point total ranked second among the five Southern Conference teams in the field.
App State returns to action Jan. 10 with a Southern Conference dual meet at Gardner-Webb. The reigning SoCon champions have a 1-0 league record.
