It's the second meet of the 2017 season for the Mountaineers, who hosted the Covered Bridge Open in Boone on Sept. 1. North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Troy, Georgia State (women), Western Carolina, UNCW, College of Charleston, Lees-McRae and Louisburg College (a nationally ranked junior college program) are scheduled to compete this weekend.
For the Mountaineers and fellow Sun Belt rivals Coastal Carolina, Troy and Georgia State, it's an opportunity for those teams to familiarize themselves with the State Farm fields/Kennedy trails course before it hosts the conference championship races Oct. 28. Last year, App State's women won the Sun Belt title in Alabama, with Coastal Carolina taking second and Georgia State placing fourth.
Dual-meet scoring Saturday between App State and longtime rival Western Carolina will also determine the winner of "The Little Brown Jug" for the 21st time. App State alum Brad Dodson, a neighbor of retired Western Carolina coach Danny Williamson, created the mountain face jug.
App State's men and women have an 18-2 lead in that spirited competition.
