Postgame Quotes - App State vs. Georgia Southern

App State Head Coach Scott Satterfield

Opening Comment:
"Awesome to get six wins again. Get the opportunity to get to go play in the postseason especially. Real fitting and nice to do it against Georgia Southern our rival team. Really proud of our guys the way they battled back. Short rest, five days before we played this game coming off of two heartbreak losses. They were really focused this week Had a great week of practice, just a mental type of practice all week and that paid dividends tonight because I thought our guys played fresh and they played hard. I'm really proud of our defense and how they bounced back. Probably one of the worst performances in the past three years was last week, and they came back tonight and really played excellent. We could be a little more aggressive, went for it on fourth down, faked a punt and the reason was our defense played really well tonight. Proud of our two freshman running backs tonight. I thought they ran hard. Marcus Williams Jr. and Daetrich (Harrington) really ran the ball like we knew we needed to do tonight. We ended up with 46 carries and our goal was to get 40. We thought that would give us a great chance to win."

On limiting Georgia Southern's rushing attack:
"They have athletes. We watched film all week and we were nervous. The QB could really run. Some of their best plays were when he dropped back then took off running and getting first downs with him running that way. I was really proud of that, particularly coming off last week and what we did defensively, and to be able to hold them to 111 yards rushing and that's incredible. If you can stop them from running the football you have a great chance of winning."

On App State's kicking game:
"Chandler (Staton) has come in and done a phenomenal job. That was awesome hitting that 53-yarder in the first half giving us momentum right there. He's a guy that doesn't let things bother him. In practice if he misses one, it doesn't faze him. He gets right back up and kicks it in there. I like that about him. He doesn't let things bother him and as a kicker you have to be that way. That's exactly what we need those guys to do, make those kicks when they come."

App State senior DE Caleb Fuller

On the successful fake punt:
"First off I want to give all glory to God for the opportunity. We've been practicing that (fake) for a couple weeks in a row and I've been waiting on a home game to run it and an opportunity presented itself and coach trusted me to get it done. I tried to score, but it didn't work out like that."

On his excitement when the fake was called:
"I really didn't even have time to think because when we ran out there it was a normal call, and when we looked to the sideline he called the fake. So by the time I had any time to think, I had the ball in my hands. The hole was there so I had to hit it as fast as I could."

On the defense's effort against Georgia Southern:
"I mean we knew they were going to come out and we'd get their best shot. They've always played hard whether they're undefeated or haven't won a game. It's a rival we just kind of had to, we knew it was going to be faster than it was in practice. We had to get a feel for the game and then after that we just communicated and executed and it worked out. Honestly I feel like we've faced some pretty agile quarterbacks in the past weeks, so there wasn't really much difference in preparing for him. On film he's very elusive. He can make you miss tackles, but I think pursuing the ball and trying to stay in his face so he can't make throws on the field (is what helped us)."

App State redshirt-freshman kicker Chandler Staton

On making a 53-yard field goal:
"Great experience. Honestly one of the longest I've ever kicked in a game. My previous was 49 yards. I wasn't sure by the time it got through I was covered and I couldn't really see much. It was a solid strike from what I could tell. I kind of always enjoyed being iced; it brings you down and gives you time to think."

On difference in making long field goals vs. short ones:
"Really nothing, maybe get a little bit more adrenaline."

App State senior QB Taylor Lamb

On connecting with Ike Lewis for touchdowns:
"We've got it down pat. They go one-on-one with him, and that's what we're looking for. (Ike) has been the underneath and deep threat guy for us this year. We can put him in different places and that's what makes him so versatile."

App State senior WR Ike Lewis

On receiving throws from Taylor Lamb:
"My eyes get big, and Taylor just makes an excellent throw every time. We do a lot of pass and catch at practice. me and Taylor get a lot of work in on and off the field, and we had a lot of work this summer. With me being the slot I'm more comfortable being the slot, I like to read the safety and go off of what he's doing. Taylor makes an excellent throw every time." \

Georgia Southern Interim Head Coach Chad Lunsford

Opening statement:
"We've got to get ourselves into a position to win and our defense did that tonight. In the second half, we gave up some explosives to No. 2 [Ike Lewis]. They played really well, but we did not generate anything on offense. Six points are not going to get it done. We've got a lot of evaluation to do. We've got to make sure in these next three games that we find that way to get explosive on offense and get some points on the board."

On long upcoming break
"Our guys have been going for a long time, and I think we need to be able to step back away from it for a bit. Obviously, it will give us some time as a coaching staff to evaluate. We've got to evaluate ourselves as coaches and evaluate our players. We've got to make sure that these next three games we have our best game plan and we're ready to go."

Looking forward:
"I hurt for the players because I think the guys have played hard and have played to the end of ballgames. We're not getting W's. We're not getting the results we want. We have to change something and find something to spark it. We have one more game in Paulson and that's senior day. We need Eagle Nation out again to send these seniors out on the right note. We're going to put up a better product on the field for them."
