BOONE, N.C. - A pair of freshmen in Maria José Zacarias and
Teodora Sevo will represent Appalachian State women's tennis in the annual Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
The duo will represent App State in a stacked tournament that features teams such as Florida, Oklahoma State, Clemson, Illinois, South Florida, Texas, TCU, Virginia Tech, Liberty, Ohio State, Boston College and UCF. Appalachian is one four Group of Five programs to take part in the three-day event held in Bradenton, Fla.
Both Sevo and Zacarias will start off the tournament with tough matches against foes from TCU.
"Looking forward to have two of our freshmen mix it up in an incredibly talented draw," head coach
Blake Mosley said. "You have the defending national champions in Florida and the runner-ups from the previous year in Oklahoma State. It's a great opportunity for Maria and Teodora to showcase App State tennis and hopefully pick up a couple ranked wins.
Sevo and Zacarias have enjoyed a successful first fall with the Black and Gold. Zacarias captured a singles flight title at the Wake Forest Invitational as she finished 3-0 with wins over Wake Forest, James Madison and Richmond, while Sevo has picked up at least one victory in each fall tournament.
Hosted by the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, the tournament is in a unique setting as its the only college event in the nation played on a clay court. Stay tuned for results at appstatesports.com.
