PHILADELPHIA — Third-place finishes from
Forrest Przybysz and
Alan Clothier highlighted a strong showing for Appalachian State's wrestling team at the Keystone Classic on Sunday.
Competing at The Palestra in Philadelphia, the Mountaineers totaled 96.5 points to rank fifth among 12 teams in the high-profile field. In addition to the third-place efforts from Przybysz at 174 pounds and Clothier at 184 pounds, App State benefited from fifth-place finishes by
Laken Cook (157),
Thomas Flitz (165),
Taylor Jackson (184) and
Cary Miller (285).
App State's sixth-place finishes came from
Randall Diabe (197) and
Bradley Irwin (141), while
Gavin Londoff (149),
Joe Accousti (165) and
Michael Elliott (165) had seventh-place finishes.
Przybysz reached the semifinals with a 3-0 start that included decisive wins against Penn's Khamari Whimper (15-0 technical fall), Franklin and Marshall's Josh Young (16-5 major decision) and Eastern Michigan's Andrew McNally (10-0 major decision). Przybysz lost a 6-2 decision to Harvard's Joseph Johnson before capping a 5-1 weekend with victories against Duke's Matthew Finesilver (13-11 decision) and Northwestern's Johnny Sebastian (5-2 decision).
Clothier won a 6-1 decision over Drexel's Owen Brooks before suffering a 4-2 loss to Northwestern's Mitch Sliga. Clothier responded by going 4-0 with victories against Eastern Michigan's Kayne MacCallum (5-2 decision), Penn State's Devon Van Cura (3-1 decision), Drexel's Josh Murphy (3-2 decision) and Rider's Michale Fagg-Daves (3-2 decision).
App State returns to action next Sunday with a road match against North Carolina at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill. The Mountaineers are back in Varsity Gym to face N.C. State on Dec. 10.
