Women's Tennis Improving as Fall Progresses

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis concluded the Spartan Classic Invitational hosted by UNCG on Sunday, capturing the third weekend with 20-plus wins in as many tournaments.

The Mountaineers finished 16-5 in singles play and a solid 8-4 in doubles competition over the two-day event, which was in a hidden dual format. Appalachian participated in singles and doubles play against host UNCG, Campbell and Presbyterian. 

On day one, Appalachian posted a 9-4 mark en route to capturing four out of seven matches against the Camels and a dominating 5-1 mark against the Blue Hose. Eight of nine singles victories were in straight sets, while the trio of Rebecca Morse, Teodora Sevo, and Heidi Swope finished 2-0. Melissa Machado, Emily Gaskins, and Maria José Zacarias all chipped in with a win as well. 

The Mountaineers finished 2-2 in doubles action on day one but vastly improved with more opportunities on the final day of the invite, netting a 7-1 mark. Taylor Bygrave and Morse had themselves a stellar weekend as partners, teaming up for a perfect 3-0 record. Machado and Sevo recorded a pair of victories on the second day as partners while Swope and Zacarias, along with Gaskins and Anglesjö, earned two wins in doubles action. App also dominated UNCG in singles play as it registered six of seven matches against the hosts. 

"Thanks to Ale Guerra for putting on a great event," head coach Blake Mosley said.  "We had great weather and all the teams were competing at a high level so it was a really fun weekend of tennis.  We're doing a great job at developing our identities on the court and it shows in our results.  We are looking forward to the ITA Regionals this coming week at UNC Chapel Hill."

 App State will continue the fall season with the ITA Regionals hosted by North Carolina next week from Oct. 18-22.
